SCAM SALES ON AUCTION SITES

IF IT LOOKS TO GOOD TO BE TRUE, IT PROBABLY IS…

We’ve recently seen an increase in the number of buyers becoming the victims of quite sophisticated scams, involving the sale / purchase of second-hand equipment.

As real human moderation becomes less and less and sales sites become ever more automated, these scams will become more common and more difficult to spot.

So, here’s a very quick list of suggestions to hopefully help you stay safe when looking at buying second-hand Audio Note (UK) products: -

Be cautious from the start. If a deal looks too good to be true, it most probably is!

If an item is for sale on a smaller, local sales site, be very careful. These kind of sites are often

chosen by scammers because of their less strict buying and selling rules.

In general, it’s best to stick to buying from the more established sales platforms that offer the buyer some kind of protection and insurance if things go wrong.

Ask the seller to provide a picture of the unit with a piece of paper in front of it

with your name, today’s date, and a random phrase of your choice hand written on it.

If the seller refuses to do this for whatever reason, walk away.

Ask the seller to provide detailed external and internal pictures of the unit and check to see

if any serial numbers written internally match the serial number on the rear of the unit.

If they do not, or the seller refuses to provide extra pictures, walk away.

Ask the seller for a quick WhatsApp / FaceTime / video chat so you can see them and the product,

and to see that it operates. If they refuse to do this, walk away.

NEVER PAY VIA BANK TRANSFER. If the seller does not accept PayPal or cash on collection

(or credit card if it’s a dealer), walk away.

Ask if the seller will accept collection in person by yourself or a personal friend who lives close to them. If the seller says no to this, walk away.

NEVER agree to the seller using any kind of ‘escrow’ scheme where you pay an external shipping company who ‘hold the payment’ until you have received the goods and are satisfied with them.

This is currently the most common kind of scam.

NEVER send the seller pictures of your personal documents (passports, driving licences, ID cards etc). Any seller who asks for this is definitely trying to scam you, and will use the pictures you send to scam others in future.

If possible, buy through a respectable and well-known dealer, who has good feedback and an actual, physical store.

Buying from private individuals, particularly in another country, will always present far greater risks.

IF AT ANY POINT YOU FEEL LIKE THERE IS SOMETHING UNTRUSTOWORTHY OR STRANGE GOING ON, TRUST YOUR INSTINCTS AND WALK AWAY.

If you have any questions about an item that is for sale, contact us directly via the website, Facebook, or Instagram and we will take a look for you.
